Ellen has been with the Cornell Waste Management Institute (CWMI) since its creation in 1987. She has been Director of CWMI since 1993. In that role she develops multi-disciplinary projects involving faculty, Cornell cooperative extension staff, governmental and non-governmental organizations and communities to address waste management issues. Most projects have both research and outreach components.

Her previous experience includes working for the Department of Environmental Protection of the State of Connecticut, the Connecticut Department of Health Services and the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority. In addition, Ellen served as an elected member of the Town Board of Ithaca from 1993-1999.

She received an M.S. degree in geological sciences from Cornell University in 1975 and a BA in geology from Boston University in 1971.

A primary focus of Ellen's work is the management of organic residuals including land application of sewage sludges (aka biosolids) and septage, and composting. The development and implementation of effective outreach for university-based environmental science is a long-standing interest.
